Being a Compeer is as simple as going for a walk, having a conversation, going to a movie, or picking up the phone. Through Compeer, a volunteer can help change someone's life for the better, and it's just as simple as being a friend.
A Compeer volunteer is a man or woman who shares a friendship with someone socially isolated by mental illness and economically disadvantaged. He or she is a sensitive person who understands and accepts someone who may feel misunderstood or rejected.
Compeers spend at least four hours a month together, seeking to have weekly contact wherever possible.
Compeer Volunteer Opportunities are fun and flexible to fit any schedule. There are several different types of opportunities available:
- Compeer 1:1 friendship -- The Compeer program's goal is to provide a one-to-one volunteer relationship for people with a mental health diagnosis. This friendship “match” meets at least four hours a month to participate in social and community activities like lunch, shopping, walks, or ball games.
- Compeer Calling Buddy -- Compeer Calling volunteers may not feel comfortable or be able to volunteer for a one-to-one match, so they make weekly telephone calls to people on our waiting list to offer them a “phone connection” until a one-to-one volunteer can be for them.
- Compeer E-Buddies: E-Buddy is for individuals who prefer to communicate through text, messaging, and/or email.
